Permata Gayo represents farmers throughout the Aceh region of Indonesia's largest island, Sumatra. Comprising the northernmost area of Sumatra, Aceh lies just above the equator, with its humid tropical climate punctuated by the Barisan Mountain highlands. Depending on elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 meters above sea level, Permata Gayo farmers produce a variety of Arabica varietals, including Bourbon, Tim Tim, Ateng, Super, and Catimor. With a long heritage of cultivating coffee, the native Gayonese that make up Permata Gayos membership have become known for a distinctive coffee characterized by a full, syrupy body, medium acidity, and earthy with notes of pepper, dark walnut, leather, and red fruits.

Permata Gayo cooperative was founded in 2006 in the Bener Meriah district of the Aceh Province in Sumatra, Indonesia. Cooperative Coffees began importing coffee from Permata in 2009. Permata Gayo was certified organic by FLO in 2008 and began exporting its coffee under the fair-trade system i 2009. It contains 3,000 members and occupies roughly about 4,500 hectares of land. Delegates and collectors represent the farmers at the general assembly and coop meetings. They are responsible for electing the Board of Directors who then employs the staff. Permata Gayo occupies an office in Bener Meriah and built a new lab facility in 2010. Permata Sub-District of Bener Meriah District, Aceh Province is located near Lake Tawar.
